Melba Williams-Kirk is an indie filmmaker from Nashville, TN. She began her professional career in Washington, DC working in production management at Discovery Communications, Inc and then as a freelance producer in documentary and reality television in New York. She has produced, directed, and edited numerous recognized works, screening domestically and internationally. Her award-winning film A Thousand Words explores the nuance of shared memory and trauma on the family unit through the voices of her sibling and late father, a Vietnam Veteran. It was most recently screened and collected by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. She is completing her latest fiction film, The Visit, which captures the tension that brews amidst shifting identities and family secrets.

Melba holds a BFA in Communications from Howard University and an MA from the Documentary Film Production program at Stanford University. She taught as a Lecturer in the Media Arts Department at Middle Tennessee State University before joining Georgia State University as a Professor of Practice in Fiction Filmmaking.
